Primary use / Purpose:

The Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) is a 27-item inventory rated on a 5 point Likert-type scale. The instrument’s purpose is to categorize sleep disorders in children. As well as giving an overall score the instrument uses five subdomains: disorders of initiating and maintaining sleep, sleep breathing disorders, disorders of arousal, sleep-wake transition disorders, disorders of excessive somnolence, and sleep hyperhidrosis.

Background:

A growing research base now suggests that a large number of children suffer from sleep disorders. A figure of 35-46% is given as one estimate of the prevalence of sleep disorders in children. However, much of the research fails to specify the nature of the disorder and so fails to address the wide variety of underlying causes. For this reason, the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) was developed and evaluated.

Psychometrics:

The psychometric properties of the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) are discussed in Bruni, O., Ottavianio, S., Guidetti, V., Romoli, M., Innocenzi, M., Cortesi, F., & Giannotti, F. (1996).
